A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical energy of a fuel and an oxidizing agent into electricity through a pair of redox reactions. Fuel cells are different from most batteries in requiring a continuous source of fuel and oxygen to sustain the chemical reaction, whereas in a battery the chemical energy usually comes from substances that are already present in the battery. Fuel cells can produce electricity continuously for as long as fuel and oxygen are supplied.

ईंधन सेल एक विद्युतरासायनिक युक्ति है जो ईंधन से प्राप्त रासायनिक ऊर्जा को सीधे विद्युत में परिवर्तित करती है। यह परिवर्तन एक रासायनिक अभिक्रिया के द्वारा होता है जिसमें धनावेशित हाइड्रोजन ऑयन, ऑक्सीजन या किसी अन्य आक्सीकारक से क्रिया करते हैं। ईंधन सेल, परम्परागत बैटरियों से इस दृष्टि से भिन्न हैं कि इनकी रासायनिक अभिक्रिया को चलते हुए बनाये रखने के लिये ईंधन और ऑक्सीजन के अविराम स्रोत आवश्यक होता है। ईंधन सेल तब तक ही विद्युत उत्पादन कर सकते हैं जब तक ईंधन और ऑक्सीजन की आपूर्ति सुनिश्चित बनी रहे।
